Local 2 will hold a 5K Race/Walk for the Mesothelioma Applied Research
Foundation on August 14, 2011 at South Park in Pittsburgh. The Mesothelioma
Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) is a 501пїЅ3 non-profit
organization dedicated to eradicating the life-ending and vicious effects of
mesothelioma. The Meso Foundation promotes critically needed research to develop
more effective treatments and ultimately a cure, and provides patient support
and education. We have awarded nearly $6.5 million in grant funding, advancing
mesothelioma science through promising studies around the world. Mesothelioma is
a malignant tumor that aggressively and painfully invades the lining of the
lungs, heart or stomach until it destroys the vital organs. Diagnosis is
difficult and often delayed. Prognosis is very poor (4 to 14 months average). In
most cases, standard treatments have only limited effect. Currently, there is no
cure. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos was used for decades
in construction, industry, the Navy, even household product and appliances.
There is no safe level of exposure, and asbestos is still common in homes,
schools and- as the aftermath of 9/11 has shown- office buildings. This is such
a worthy cause! Please join us for our race!
