This year there will be a half-marathon, 5 k and 10 k race. The Ludington race is now in its 31st year, and through its history has had great rivalries, great races and great times, all for good causes. Visit LudingtonLakestride.com for the online registration form. The Ludington Lakestride Half Marathon began in 1980, and 32 years later, it is stronger than ever. With one of the most beautiful and scenic courses in Michigan, the Lakestride attracts 800-1,000 runners from around the state and beyond; last year there were 999 runners. Walkers are also welcome to participate in any of the races. Race organizer Maurie Holbrook said, We are so pleased that this race continues to be a major running event in Michigan. Our runners always tell us what a great time they have. Our sponsors are great and provide all kinds of goods and services to the race participants, and that shows us that our race continues to be well-respected in both the competitive and recreational running communities. And that participation also shows that the sponsors and runners support the causes the race supports. All race participants receive a long sleeve tee shirt; if runners desire, they can pay an additional $10 for a Dry Wicking Tee Shirt. Since 2010, the race has been managed by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Any profits from the race will support the Michigan FCA and its many causes. The primary cause this year is to endow a memorial scholarship in honor of Leanna Geers, who lost her battle to cancer in 2010. Leanna was a high school state track champion and a Division II All-American in track at Ferris State. This years race also supports the Dale Rincovicz family and other local veterans. Runners can also choose to run for Marathon Mission, a community-based umbrella charity. The Ludington race is considered to be one of the top runners races in Michigan. The course goes through many beautiful areas of Ludington, along a combination of tree-lined park roads as well as a wooded trail along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Participants at Ludington always comment on the many perks provided. This year they include a chiropractors and massage therapists tent, and a pasta and pizza dinner. The Ludington race has a storied history. In 1982 Olympic gold and silver medalist Frank Shorter won over two-time U.S. Road Racer of the year Herb Lindsey. Boston Marathon winner Greg Meyer has been a participant, as has Boston Marathon multiple winner Bill Rodgers, who ran away with the race in 1984. The Ludington Lakestride is adding a 10K (6.2 miles) race this year. The length is perfect for those who want to go further than 5K, but not run a half marathon. Sign-ups for the 2012 event are up 60% over last year, so this promises to be a great year for the Lakestride. Registration is now open.
