| 4/26/08 Greenhorn Adventure Race Distance: see: http://www.ex2adventures.com/greenhorn-ar.php Location : Rocky Gap State Park State : Maryland Contact : Jim Harman Phone : 571-251-6034 Fax : Website : www.ex2adventures.com Email : info@ex2adventures.com Additional Info : http://www.ex2adventures.com/greenhorn-ar.php Welcome to Adventure Racing! The third annual Greenhorn AR was created to offer competitors a gateway into the sport of adventure racing. This 2-4 hour sprint adventure race was designed with the beginner in mind. While there is significant challenge built in, this event is fun and highly achievable for the novice racer. The navigation is straight forward, the trails are well marked, and the maps that we provide are excellent. The mountain biking will take racers over mostly non-technical fire roads and pavement but there are some semi-technical singletrack trails to provide an extra challenge. Finally, the paddling will take place on a clear and calm mountain lake. Race Format. Teams of two or three will be tasked with finding 7-15 checkpoints dispersed throughout beautiful Rocky Gap State Park in Western Maryland. These checkpoints must be found on bike, foot, or in a canoe. The exact order and distance of each segment is kept a secret until race day but we can tell you that the course will include the most mileage of biking, followed by trail running, and then paddling (a canoe). There are also plenty of surprises, twists, and decision making in this race, all of which will cost or save your team time. This event was sold out in 2007 so save the date, call your friends, register, and get excited for a great day of adventure racing action. |

This event is really three races in one, allowing athletes to compete in either a 12 hour mountain biking and trail running relay duathlon OR a 6 hour mountain bike relay race OR a 6 hour trail running relay race. The duathlon challenges solos and relay teams of two or three to complete as many laps as possible in a 12 hour period, mountain biking along a 9 mile course from 9am-3pm and trail running on a 5 mile course from 3pm-9pm. Solos and teams of two will also have the opportunity to test their mountain biking OR trail running skills while racing for 6 hours alongside and at the same time as the duathlon racers. This inaugural event will be epic and racers will not want to miss this one! About Rocky Gap State Park and the Amenities: Rocky Gap has tons to do and is just a 2.5 hour drive from the Washington and Baltimore metro areas. The trail network at Rocky Gap is stellar and the 9 mile mountain biking course and 5 mile trail running course are filled with fun, twisty, and semi-technical singletrack, much of which is right along the lake. On the night of the race (9/20/08), racers will be permitted to camp in the huge grassy pit area which is located right next to two gorgeous beaches. Swimming is permitted in the lake and at that time of year, the water temperature should be perfect for those in-between-lap swims. Showers and bathrooms are also available right near the transition and pit areas. For those that do not want to camp, there is a fancy lodge right on site and plenty of bed and breakfasts located right in Cumberland (less than 10 miles away). |
