Sadly, many of our favorite animals are euthanized each year at our local shelter because people simply do not have their pets spayed or neutered. Join us so we can stop pet overpopulation...one step at a time. ABOUT THE WALK: You can walk with or without a dog. If you can't bring a pet, you can walk in honor or memory of a pet (bring a photo!), or you could walk in honor of one of the shelter pets. The walk will be held at the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum and will be approximately 1-2 miles. Directions and maps will be available here and on our website. Water and rest stations will be available. Additional activities include: - Peanut Butter Eating Contest (Dogs Only!) - Pet & Owner Look-a-Like Contest - Pet & Owner Portraits - Best Dog Trick - Best Dressed Dogs - Raffle - A performance by the Overtones, JMU's finest co-ed a'cappella group -... and more! COMMUNITY: If you're an animal lover, we bet many of your family members, neighbors, friends, classmates and co-workers are, too! Gather your entourage and form a team of 5 or more walkers. Wear matching outfits or bring signs to show off your team's spirit! All teams will be listed on the JMU Cause for Paws website. You'll receive a discounted group rate, have a great time with friends, and help the SPCA in its quest to stop pet overpopulation. This will also be a great way to build the relationship between Harrisonburg and the JMU community! DONATE: All donations are welcome whether they be monetary, animal related items, or just your personal support. (If donating by check, make check payable to RHSPCA) We will be holding a dog and cat toy drive and will be collecting all donations on the day of the event. In addition to the knowledge that your gift will be enjoyed by the animals at the SPCA, you will also be given one free raffle ticket for every item you donate with no limit! Basically, go nuts, and donate a hundred items. In addition to pet toys, we will be accepting anything from the full wish list of the SPCA: http://www.rhspca.org/wishlist.html REGISTER: You can register online at our website, or print off the registration form and deliver it to us in person on the day of the event. So far, VentureQuest has challenged, rewarded, and inspired over 2000 athletes in its eight year history. We are looking forward to producing our 9th VQ in 2008. This 5-9 hour adventure race is the longest and most challenging adventure race on the EX2 calendar. This race was designed for the sport level racer, however, VQ has challenged both seasoned vets and the first time adventure racer. Racers must find a series of checkpoints as they bike along the demanding semi-technical single-track of the Fountainhead Mountain Biking Trail system, navigate both on and off trail along the Bull Run-Occoquan trail system corridor, and paddle the slow moving waters of the Occoquan Reservoir. The VentureQuest course changes every year and stays a mystery until race weekend. Over the years, the overall distance of the course has consistently measured between 28-35 miles. Teams of three and solo competitors navigate a course with segment breakdowns ranging from 3-8 miles of paddling, 8-13 miles of trekking, and 10-16 miles of mountain biking. VentureQuest is held in Western Fairfax County only 30 minutes west of Washington DC. The race course runs through three parks operated by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. The terrain is gorgeous and has a truly remote feel for being so close to a major metro area. Racers love the fact that they can compete in a challenging adventure race so close to home.
