| 5/22/2010 Run for the Red 5 K & 10K Indiana Veterans' Home, West Lafayette, IN IN American Red Cross 765-742-6975 www.redcrossrun.org bob@lafayetteredcross.org The Run for the Red supports our services that benefit military personnel and families, veterans and emergency responders. The Red Cross has a federally mandated responsibility to serve military personnel with emergency communication 24/7 between service members abroad and their families here at home. In 2009, the chapter provided 137 communication calls. The Red Cross also transports veterans to hospitals and clinics around the state for services they cannot obtain locally. Red Cross volunteers made 627 trips for veterans in 2009. The Run also supports our local first responders. They are first on the scene 24/7 in personal and community emergencies, in all kinds of weather, and they stay until their often dangerous jobs are done. The Red Cross is at their side through fires and floods, making sure over 1,600 first responders had food, coffee, and a place to get warm in 2009. The chapter has been able to do all this and provide other services to the community through the generous support of donors. The Red Cross does not receive government funding despite our congressional mandate to provide services. This year’s Run will be held on May 22, 2010 at the Indiana Veterans’ Home on Soldiers Home Road. Last year’s first Run for the Red attracted over 300 runners and walkers to the Veteran’s Home on May 30, 2009. With the help of a local serviceman, the Run was paralleled the day after by over 400 members of the armed forces at Camp LIBERTY in Baghdad, Iraq, an event we hope to continue to sponsor. |
