Race For Grace and its beneficiary foundation are named after Grace Elizabeth Ekis, a precious 5-year-old who lost her courageous 13-month battle with a rare cancerous brain tumor on Valentine’s Day 2008. Grace’s cancer was a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a tumor of the brainstem for which there is no known cure and there have been no advances in treatment options for more than thirty years. We encourage you to register prior to March 21, 2009 to ensure you will receive a race t-shirt. However, we will also accept registrants from 7:00-8:00AM on race day. Extra t-shirts will be ordered, but supplies may be limited. A line dance in Grace’s honor will be taught before the race and performed throughout the day. The race will begin promptly at 9:00AM. After the race, there will be an award ceremony, dance performances, hair donation, Chinese auction, and food/beverages available for purchase. (If you are interested in donating your hair, please email RaceForGrace@gmail.com). An awareness table and fun activities for children and families to enjoy will be featured during the day as well. The race will be held on April 4,2009 and registration will begin at 11:00AM on the 100 block of S. Allen Street (across from the Municipal building). Registration is $15 from now until March 15, and $20 after March 15. All participants will receive a race day T-shirt and free breakfast and lunch foods will be provided in addition to entertainment. More information can be found at our website, AutismSpeaks.org/u/psu All Proceeds from the race go towards Autism research and the Autism Speaks Foundation. This event has registered over 3,600 participants and has raised over $475,000 in it's short three year existence. We have also launched a national campaign called "Autism Speaks U" which holds the race at various campuses across the country. If so, start training now for the Evening Sun Adventure Race of the Hanover YMCA. In 2008, 155 co-ed participants from five states competed in this challenging and exciting race. Participants can compete individually or on teams in either the short or long course. The race consists of trail running, canoeing, portaging, mountain biking, and completion the obstacle course. This years individuals may also complete the short course as a relay team. The relay option allows one teammate to start the race with the trail run, both individuals canoe together and the other teammate mountain bikes. During the race, family and youth a activities will be offered. There will be a picnic and award ceremony at the conclusion of the race. All proceeds benefit YMCA youth programming. |
