I was 44 years old, 235 lbs with high blood pressure, a dying marriage and not much to look forward to. I had to nap in the afternoon and felt dizzy through out the day. I would dream about being as slim as I was in my teens and would make the occasional half hearted attempt to diet or do some exercise. I would read every book and article I could get my hands on trying to find that elusive magic pill, potion or piece of equipment which would rid me of those unwanted pounds and make my life as perfect as I dreamt it could be. I never found it. My father passed away, suddenly, from a heart attack which was firmly linked with smoking, my blood pressure was now in the dangerous area and I was hypoglycemic, a precursor to diabetes. I noticed all the people, not much older than me, unable to walk and live but confined to scooters. All that seemed wrong was the excess weight. At last - an epiphany. I was not going to end up like that! No magic pill, so I changed what I ate. I did not worry about how much but changed the white bread to whole wheat, white pasta to whole wheat and lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Oh yes, I cut out beef. I started to walk 3 times a week. Just for half an hour at a time. Within a couple of months I lost 20 lbs. Once I was comfortable with my new life long food choices, this was not a diet, I joined Weight Watchers to help learn portion control. I had kept on walking and started walk/slow running on a tread mill. At this point I felt I could handle more, I joined a learn to run clinic. At the end of 10 weeks, I RAN A 5 K RACE!!! Who knew? Four years later. I run 4 to 5 times a week, do weights 2 to 3 times a week and wish I could fit more in my busy schedule. I am fitter now than I was 20 years ago. I have more energy and get more out of life. Oh and I am now a proper weight for my height. My marriage did not survive but I date more now than I did as a teen. Life can be a lot of fun and I intend to enjoy every moment of it. The most important piece of advice I can give you is, make yourself a priority. You are important, know it, believe it and practice it.
