Transforming the Greater Greensboro Area into a more bicycle-friendly community. P. O. Box 5764 Greensboro, NC 27435 BIG Salute to Bike Lanes Greensboro, NC – With gas prices hovering near $3.00 a gallon, alternative forms of transportation are becoming an economical necessity. Why not try a form of transport that runs on an alternative fuel, like, say bagels and coffee? September marks the first anniversary of Bicycling In Greensboro, Inc. (BIG). A celebratory bicycle ride will highlight the opening of the first new links in Greensboro’s bicycle lane network. BIG invites everyone to join us on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 10:30 am to salute the bicycle lanes’ official opening. The ride will begin at Lindley Park Recreation Center (2907 Springwood Drive) and follow the Spring Garden bicycle lane east to downtown Greensboro. There will be a break for snacks, etc. at the Green Bean, before we return to the starting point, also via the Spring Garden Street bicycle lanes (approximately a 6 mile round-trip). BIG’s Salute to Bike Lanes aims to: • Celebrate the opening of Greensboro’s first bicycle lanes and commend the Greensboro Department of Transportation and the Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization for their work in bicycle and pedestrian planning thus far; • Educate local bicyclists on the proper and safe way to ride on streets with bicycle lanes and share the road; • Increase public awareness for bicyclists and understanding of safe driving habits near bicyclists in bicycle lanes; • Educate the community about the benefits of bicycling as a form of transportation; • Encourage more people to try bicycle commuting and recreational bicycling. |
